Depression and Games

Depression and Games
By Elizabeth Filips • Issue #6 • View online
Heya,
One of my favourite quotes from one of my favourite people in the world Naval Ravikant is:
The opposite of play isn’t work. It’s depression.
This hit me hard. I feel I’d always thought of things as either work or play. Was I doing ‘me things’ or was I ‘working’. When I was younger I couldn’t wait to finish homework so I could watch TV.
Things were always phrased in such a way that I could ‘rest and have fun’ once I’d done my ‘work’.
But the thing is, they aren’t two sides of the same spectrum, and realising this was life-changing.
The opposite of fun isn’t work, it’s misery (or as Naval puts it, depression).
And work sits somewhere in between, depending on the task. I job I hate is more on the misery side and a task I love is close to, or even fully - play.
So when I find myself in a state of flow and ‘working’ for 20h in a row, fully content, inspired and happy - it’s not because I’ve become and different person and I hate play.
It’s because to me, I am playing.
So that’s become my goal. To find things that look like work, pay like work, qualify as work, but that feel fully like play.
It’s amazing how ‘successful’ one suddenly becomes.
Wishing you an amazing week,
Love,
Liz

Quote of the week
“Where in your life are you good at moderation? Where are you an all-or-nothing type? Where do you lack a shut-off switch? It pays to know thyself.”

This Article - This article on the scarcity mindset, and why we tend to dig ourselves deeper every time we’re in a hole was eye opening. Worth a read!
This Video - I’m sorry but this is so wholesome! A video of a little boy catching his first fish in the most beautiful family dynamic just made my day.
